What the Prospectives are Thinking

The past two months at SMU have been filled with numerous visits by high school seniors. These students usually come on a Thursday and stay through Saturday to get the ultimate SMU experience. But what many of us consider the ultimate experience isn’t necessarily desirable for these college-bound students. The past three senior girls who came to stay with a few of my friends each left with an unsure feeling as to if they even wanted to consider attending SMU. I was shocked to learn this because I am so happy at SMU and wouldn’t change one thing about it. Upon further investigation as to why these girls left with this feeling, I found the common denominator: the Party Scene.

While each of these girls realized there would be drinking in college, none of them realized how predominant and dangerous this factor is at SMU. Basically, many of us current SMU students have grown to accept this late-night behavior while it comes as a shock to others. These three girls explained that half of the people around them were blacked-out, and about every tenth person had to throw up at some point during the night. Some girls who progressively drank themselves to obliteration became sloppy and slutty. We all come to college to get a stellar education and to meet and make lifelong friends. As of now a good number of Prospective Students aren’t seeing that these two things are possible at SMU.

  1. I feel sorry for those three girls that they had to witness the after effects of late night college excursions. Depending on what part of campus they live, partying is more prevalent than others. Unfortunately, partying and drinking are, in general, part of the typical college experience that many people wish to experience or hope to be uninvolved in.

  2. I am sorry to hear the girls did not necessarily love SMU. Unfortunately every college has a party scene, and they are all pretty similar. There are always those people that are out of control at every party or bar. This is something the girls will eventually have to deal with at every college. Hopefully at the school they choose they will be able to find something they enjoy better than the party scene.

  3. Ultimately every college has a party scene whether it is in fraternity houses or at bars, a dominant factor of college life is partying. These girls will definitely face this issue at some point or another and it is up to them how they respond to the situation. There have been numerous nights, where my friends and I have gone out and not had a single drink. Hopefully, if these girls choose not to attend SMU, they will find a place that suits their idea of a party scene.

  4. Although every school has its "party scene," SMU has been known to party too hard. SMU wasn't the first University that these girls had gone out with. However, it was the first University that they were repulsed by due to this factor. I too hope that they discover the University fit to their night life likings.
